Should I See a Doctor Before I Start Exercising?

Although most people in moderate health can safely begin an exercise routine, older adults who have been inactive for long periods of time may have a higher risk for heart disease. These adults should seek medical advice before starting or significantly increasing their physical activity.

How Much Should I Be Exercising?

Something is better than nothing! If you really want to have the most positive impact on your health you should exercise for 30 to 60 minutes a day, at 50 to 80 percent of your maximum capacity, most days of the week.

Is It Too Late for Me to Engage in Physical Activity?

No matter your age, it is important that you engage in regular physical activity. If you are concerned about your level of health, you should consult a medical professional first. Here are some tips for older adults who are concerned about becoming more physically active:

  • Start slow. Your body needs to get accustomed to working out again and should not be put to extremes right away.
  • Choose exercise activities that are fun and that you enjoy.
  • Wear comfortable clothing and footwear.
  • Warming up and cooling down are as important as exercising itself.
  • Stretching is also important, stretch slowly and consult one of our personal trainers for help with your technique.
